Earning Continuing Education Credit with is designed to be simple and convenient. To get started, simply create a free membership account. Your membership account is your record with, allowing us to keep track of all the CE credits you earn. In addition, you will have free access to a number of system features, such as full previews of the course exams, notification of new courses and more. Join today to get started.

An Overview of the Process

Once you have signed up for a free membership account with, you’re ready to start earning CE credits online. You will complete the following steps to earn credits:

  1. Browse courses, and select one that interests you.
  2. For each course, review and/or print the course information and exam questions.
  3. Study the course material. Follow along and circle the answers to exam questions if you printed the course materials.
  4. Return to the course on, and pay the applicable exam fees.
  1. Take the exam for each course selected, and print out your certificate immediately.

    [screenshot: course listing]When you come to our website, click the Courses link from the top navigation menu, and then select one of the options. Start with Overview, which will list a selection of our courses in each category. Check back often—More courses are added regularly!

    On the course listing page, each course will have an image, an excerpt of the description, and some factual data. Click the image or the course title to view the full details for the course, including the exam information.

    Get the Course Materials

Most courses available from are based on articles available online from *Families in Society*, a scholarly journal for social service professionals. You will need to log in to your member account to access the journal’s articles. (FIS subscribers can also access the course articles using their own online or print issues.)

    Courses based on books are also available. does not sell the course materials for these, but convenient links are provided to consumer websites that sell the books, such as (You are not required to purchase the material—You can also obtain it from the library, a colleague, etc.)

    Print the Exam Questions

You might find it helpful to print the page, so that you can circle your answers on the printout as you review the course material. (You won’t be submitting the printed exam, so it’s not required that you print the exam.)

    Exam Fees

    The exam fee is for the exam itself only. Online articles are typically free, and can be accessed by clicking “Get Course Material”. Books and tapes, if you don’t have them available already, can be easily purchased using the same link. You are not required to purchase the book—you can also obtain it from a colleague or a library. The purchase link is simply for your convenience.

    When you’re ready to take the online exam, return to the course summary at our website, and click “Select Course”. On the “Your Selected Courses” page, you can enter a coupon code if you have one.

    To continue the course purchase, click “Go To Payment”. You can pay by credit card or online checking account. Complete the required information fields and click “Submit Payment”. Upon payment approval you can take your course immediately.

    An additional copy of the receipt can be e-mailed to another person such as a supervisor or bookeeper. Enter that person’s e-mail address in the “Extra Receipt” field.

    Coupon users: Please confirm your coupon is listed on your order before you submit the order.

    Taking More Than One Course at a Time

    If you selected more than one course, or if you want to access an exam that you have previously purchased, visit your member account. Your account has a history of all your exams, including links to reprint your certificates, as well as links to any pending exams that you have already paid for but have not yet completed.

    Complete the Exam

    We value your feedback! Before you begin the exam, we ask that you complete a brief evaluation of your online experience. Your input helps make better for everyone.

    The course exam questions are in multiple-choice or true/false format. Click on the answer for each question, and then submit your exam.

    Print Your Certificate

    [screenshot: CE4 exam certificate]Once you have passed the exam, select which approval organization is most relevant to your needs, such as the Association of State Social Work Boards (ASWB). If you need certificates for more than one accrediting organization, you can come back to this page after downloading and modify your choice for the other certificate(s).

    A Second Chance

    If you do not pass the exam the first time around, you are allowed one additional chance at no extra cost. You will find your exam listed in your member account. See the “Returning Members” section below for instructions on how to access your exam again.

    Returning Members

    When starting a new session on, the first thing to do is login to your member account. After login, you will come to the members home page. If you have any exams waiting to be taken, there will be an alert message at the top of the page. If you paid an exam fee but have not taken the exam, or if you need a second chance on an exam, you will be able to access it from the link in that message.

    If you need to reprint a certificate, click on Your Exam History. Click the “modify” link to change the selected organization for your certificate, or print in a different format.
